EP Review: “blush” by Girl Ultra
Mexican artist Girl Ultra, born Mariana de Miguel, unveiled her fourth EP titled “blush” in July of this year, marking her boldest attempt into the domains of hyper-pop and house music. Released under Big Dada/Ninja Tune Records, “blush” is a raw and sensual exploration of de Miguel’s growth as an artist. The EP consists of sexy yet sentimental lyrics combined with the groovy flavor of hyper-pop and club-inspired hits.
Girl Ultra is known for her immense talent in versatility. While the Mexico City-born artist first made waves in the R&B scene with her soulful sound, her recent EP releases such as “El Sur” (2022) and “blush” (2024) have truly embraced hyper-pop elements and earned her a well-deserved spot performing at high-profile performances such as Coachella. Girl Ultra’s ability to smoothly shift from one genre to another flaunts her willingness to challenge herself and dive into unfamiliar territories.
Girl Ultra's “blush” consists of seven tracks that each reveal a different layer of de Miguel’s artistry. The artist opens with a wistfully atmospheric “blu” which lures listeners in with her melodic vocals and sentimental lyrics backed by the clear inspiration of early 2000s edgy guitar riffs. The track is moody and ethereal, therefore making it the perfect introduction to the EP. The title track “blush” is an upbeat and flirtatious anthem with a playful melody, while “rimel” appears to lean more into disco nostalgia with its fast-paced synths and infectious groove making it a clear standout.
As part of a new wave of young Latin artists who are redefining Latin music, Girl Ultra is forming a name for herself by blending a variety of elements into her music while also staying true to her Mexican roots. This EP is the result of broad talent on Girl Ultra’s behalf as she dives further into pushing her creative boundaries and opening doors for Latin artists to showcase and explore new genres. Girl Ultra is currently on her “blush” USA tour supporting Chromeo & TheMidnight.
“blush” is out now streaming on all music platforms.
